Applications of digital signal processing in communications

Objetivo

The utility of applying DSP techniques to communications problems is well known. In fact, these techniques have allowed the practical implementation of elements that would have been very difficult to obtain using analog procedures (e.g. adaptive equalizers, echo cancellers, high-security encrypted low bit-rate speech transmission, etc.), and their development is favouring the design of more advanced communication systems, networks, terminals and services.

These facts are universally recognized. In practice, a great deal of applied work is being carried out in Europe, even at European level (under ESA, ESPRIT, RACE, COST, etc.) in which the connection between DSP and Communication plays a fundamental role. In addition, there are a large number of European research groups carrying out basic research in this field, mainly at universities. Unfortunately, groups working in the DSP and Communication areas do not keep in regular contact thus forfeiting the cross- fertilization of ideas among different specific applications.

To create the dialogue between these research groups a number of sub-groups will be established depending on the interests of various participants.

In particular, the following aims and themes will be examined:

Adaptive Schemes in Communications

- schemes and algorithms for equalizers and echo cancellers in data communications;
- schemes and algorithms for hand-free telephone terminals;
- schemes and algorithms for adaptive antennas; application to mobile communications and satellite communications;
- schemes and algorithms for equalization and echo cancelling in radio transmission;
- application to multipath effect compensation, interference cancelling, and high bit rate digital modulation schemes.

Intelligent Terminals

- present networks, LANs, WANs, ISDN, IBC
- aeronautical and satellite terrestrial communications,
- portable satellite terrestrial terminals,
- development of coding, recognition and interpretation facilities for speech and image signals in the lines corresponding to the above applications.
