Improvement of the quality and compatibility of food consumption and food composition data in Europe

Objetivo

Nutrition-related diseases are a significant cause of mortality and morbidity in Europe. Within the European Community, and in Europe in general, there is a need for sound information on food intake, nutritional quality and the healthiness of the diet for use in the formulation of agriculture, trade, health and environmental safety policies. Therefore, it is necessary to develop techniques which provide information on consumption of foods, on dietary patterns, and the intake of nutrients and other food constituents. Knowledge about food composition can be most readily obtained by using data stored in computerised databases. In order to construct a network of compatible food composition databases with high data quality, the differences between different national databases with regard to identification of foods, sampling procedures, choice of analytical methods and ways of expressing constituents need to be ironed out. A comparable and compatible system of high quality data collection and data management w ll contribute to our understanding of the relationship between diet and health. The project's primary objective is therefore to establish a comparable and compatible system of high quality data on food consumption and food composition, which can be used in the formulation of food and nutrition policy and for studying the relationship between diet and health.

This project also belongs to the EC research and development programme, FLAIR.

CURRENT STATUS

The need for various types of data on food intake will be assessed and guidelines drawn up to ensure the construction of compatible food compositional databases for use with food consumption surveys. Europe will then need adequate information on food availability, money spent by households and individuals on food, and on what people in Europe actually eat.

This concerted project programme is designed to provide:

- an overview of results already obtained;
- a series of recommendations for collection and use of food balance sheets and for the construction of a food compositional database of food balance sheets;
- a series of recommendations for improvement, harmonisation and use of household budget surveys and for the construction of a food compositional database of household budget surveys;
- a series of recommendations on ways of conducting individual dietary surveys and for the construction of a food compositional database for use with individual dietary studies, both at national and regional level;
- a series of studies in which the recommendations will be tested with a limited number of surveys.

The major obstacle preventing use of the various national databases at present are the differences arising from the variable quality of the data, identification of foods, food sampling procedures, the choice of analytical methods, and ways of expressing constituents. Recommendations will be made for priorities for data collection on the content of food components other than nutrients. After examining these problems and agreeing the procedures and methods to be followed, a network of food composition databases can be set up.
