Study for assessment and management of fisheries in the western Mediterranean, part 2.

Obiettivo

The aim of the proposed research work is the logical continuation of the first part of a common study of the main French, Spanish and Italian western Mediterranean fisheries initiated in 1990. Using the results and the common data base set up during the previous 2 years, it is expected to achieve the following by the end of 1993:
an improvement of the knowledge on biological parameters, fleets dynamics, fishing efforts and capacities;
an approach of the modelling of some of the most characteristic problems regarding the multispecies and multigears demersal fisheries of the countries associated in the project;
a preliminary predictive study about the effects of changes in fishing patterns;
and an improvement of the knowledge of the economical parameters in the fisheries sector.
In order to ensure the processing of data regarding western Mediterranean fisheries dynamics, a data base has been fed with historical and contemporaneous series of catches and efforts corresponding to the fleets exploiting several target species of the area (ie hake, shrimp, sea bass, sea bream, sole). 4 parameters have been targeted.

The knowledge of demographic and biological characteristics of some demersal species, mainly hake and gambe shrimp has been improved. Stock assessments and modelling of the interactions between gears within single fisheries or between fleets in the case of shared stocks have been made. This work has been particularly oriented towards the modelling of the western Mediterranean areas where interactive fisheries exist. Studies on gear selectivity was performed to obtain additional data which will allow studies on the possible effects of changes in mesh sizes and fishing patterns on the production and age composition of the stocks.

The southern part of the Spanish western Mediterranean coast has been chosen as an experimental working zone to develop an approach in the economical field related to fisheries. The basic objective was to structure a database which will contain elements to establish the management strategies aimed at the efficiency for all the actors in the fishery system. The structure of the database regarding the economical part of the Mediterranean fisheries system analyses has been defined. This work also produced a sampling strategy analyses has been defined. This work also produced a sampling strategy and the corresponding encoding frames aimed at the realisation of the inquiries oriented towards the collection of socioeconomic information.
The project will be developed in 2 phases as follows.
In phase 1, the database will be fed with all historical series available on the main species and with data obtained from recent sampling and will be processed to obtain the demographic structure of the catches, spawning periods, reproduction parameters, areas and seasons of recruitment, growth, etc. This information will be complemented with the introduction, in the referred database, of economical parameters of the fishery and with the historical series of catches and efforts of the most relevant fleets.
In phase 2, in order to obtain an approach of the fishery assessments, studies will be undertaken on gear selectivity and effects of changes of mesh sizes, evaluation of conversion factors to define standard units for fishing effort, research on fleet structures and dynamics and, finally, modelling of the interactions between gears within single fisheries or between fleets in shared stocks.
