Accurate EEG source localisation using patient tailored head models

Objetivo

EEG records electric potential differences from electrodes attached to the human skin. Although multi-channel EEG can be used to localize its underlying sources, clinical application of this technique in, e.g. epilepsy and stroke monitoring, requires long preparation time to acquire electrode position and head shape and is also hampered by the poor knowledge of in vivo skull conductivity.
In the ERC advanced project associated to this PoC proposal a large longitudinal EEG study is performed in stroke patients, which inspired us to find a method for deriving a tailored EEG-head model without the above inconveniences. The tailored EEG-head model will require only a limited recording time. This will enable us to accurately calculate the active brain areas also in patients which can only participate for a short time in experiments. It will be an important step to use high density EEG technology for clinical applications.
We foresee that the prototype delivered by the end of the project can be developed into a commercial accessory EEG device that can be provided to end users for relatively small add-on price.
