Stress at Work; an Interactive Multimedia Information System

Objective

This project aims to develop an interactive multimedia information system to provide information on psychological stress and its effects on the individual's and family's physical and mental health and well being.

The final system will be a CD-ROM conforming standard High Sierra ISO 9660 format to work on stand alone devices. The consortium envisages the product as compatible with both al PCs IBM compatibles and most of the CD-ROM drivers.

The main objective of the project is both to raise awareness and to provide information about the nature of stress, its sources, its effects upon both the individual worker and the effectiveness of the enterprise, and to demonstrate ways in which stress at work can be managed or prevented. This project will be directed primarily at employers and trade unions concerned with Health and Safety issues in workplaces throughout the EC Member States. The system will be provided with a user friendly user interface to help its use by a wide public audience.

Stress at Work affects not only individuals' physical and psychological health and well-being, and quality of family life, but also has large effects on the effectiveness at work which has become a serious issue in most of the industrialised countries. The incidence and prevalence of stress-related somatic diseases is as well increasing. Only in the European Community more than one hundred million workers and their families are affected by stress at work. Therefore, both easy access to information on specific health and safety issues and its dissemination are, obviously, of paramount and strategic importance.
