Monitoring of Land Resources and their use; Support in image and data processing for the Remote Sensing activities, 1988-1991

Objective

Give support to the Remote Sensing projects conducted within the Institute with regard to developments and activities in image and data processing and basic informatic functions and services.

Progress to end 1990

The main activities have been

1. System access and computing power furniture for AVHRR GAC data preprocessing (Africa and Marine projects), TM and SPOT processing for Agriculture project

2. System maintenance for VAX/VMS configurations

3. Consultancy for networking between the various buildings (67, 44, 27b)

4. Functions of Information System Manager and Local System Administrator in re lation with the main computing frame in ISEI Institute

5. Order handling, cataloguing and archiving of TM, SPOT and NOAA /AVHRR data on ORACLE data base

6. Image production on VIZIR film writer

7. Modifications on the CZCS processing software (VAX version) and writing of a quick look software

8. Integration of image display and colouring packages in the PC-ERDAS configuration

9. Development of an image processing software for logical operations on various spectral bands (channels) for TM-water quality processing

10. Development of a package for displaying and handling of HRIS data (up to 320 channels)

11. Data handling and distribution of HRIS data (GER and FLI) within the EISAC 1989 campaign

12. Consultancy for definition of various image/data processing systems (Agriculture and Ocean projects)

13. Methodological support for PHD work of two students for the Agriculture project.

Detailed description of work foreseen in 1991 (expected results)

Many of the support, development and consultancy actions listed above will continue in 1991, particularly actions 1 to 6, 8, 10, 12 and 13.

New actions will be directed towards portability and standardization of the image/data processing software used within IRSA:

- Definition of a tool-kit library of routines for handling input-output and basic functions in the various formats (LIP, ERDAS, PEDITOR, SHARK, I2S etc.)

- Introduction of software development tools for standardization and documentation

Short description of evolution of work in 1992

The main trends will remain; effort will be placed on strategic planning of informatic resources of IRSA.
