Objective Hydrogen production by PEM water electrolysers (PEMWE) has the potential of becoming a key enabling technology in the deployment of FCH technologies in the future energy market as an energy storage system able to deliver hydrogen to different applications and enabling a high penetration of renewable energy sources (RES). PEMWE has showed capabilities in the emerging hydrogen scenarios to be a valid alternative to previously developed technologies, especially considering the dynamic and versatile operation expected of hydrogen production methods when integrated with RES.Despite the advances and improvements experienced to date with these systems, the technology needs to be further improved if it is to be installed as a competitive solution for energy markets and even more so in the case of off-grid configurations due to their particularities. The development of an autonomous off-grid electrolysers as an energy storage or backup solution (e.g. replacing diesel engines) is an unusual and challenging goal because it needs to have the capability of being directly coupled to RES in locations where the electricity grid is not deployed or weak. The main goal of the ELY4OFF proposal is the development and demonstration of an autonomous off-grid electrolysis system linked to renewable energy sources, including the essential overarching communication and control system for optimising the overall efficiency when integrated in a real installation Fields of science engineering and technologyelectrical engineering, electronic engineering, information engineeringelectronic engineeringcontrol systemsnatural scienceschemical scienceselectrochemistryelectrolysisengineering and technologyenvironmental engineeringenergy and fuelsrenewable energywind powerengineering and technologyenvironmental engineeringenergy and fuelsfuel cellsengineering and technologyenvironmental engineeringenergy and fuelsrenewable energyhydrogen energy Programme(s) H2020-EU.3.3. - SOCIETAL CHALLENGES - Secure, clean and efficient energy Main Programme H2020-EU.3.3.8.2. - Increase the energy efficiency of production of hydrogen mainly from water electrolysis and renewable sources while reducing operating and capital costs, so that the combined system of the hydrogen production and the conversion using the fuel cell system can compete with the alternatives for electricity production available on the market Topic(s) FCH-02.1-2015 - Improved electrolysis for Off-grid Hydrogen production Call for proposal H2020-JTI-FCH-2015 See other projects for this call Sub call H2020-JTI-FCH-2015-1 Funding Scheme FCH2-RIA - Research and Innovation action Coordinator FUNDACION PARA EL DESARROLLO DE LAS NUEVAS TECNOLOGIAS DEL HIDROGENO EN ARAGON Net EU contribution € 615 625,00 Address CR ZARAGOZA N 330A KM 566 CUARTE 22197 Huesca Spain See on map Region Noreste Aragón Huesca Activity type Research Organisations Links Contact the organisation Opens in new window Website Opens in new window Participation in EU R&I programmes Opens in new window HORIZON collaboration network Opens in new window Total cost € 615 625,00 Participants (4) Sort alphabetically Sort by Net EU contribution Expand all Collapse all ITM POWER (TRADING) LIMITED United Kingdom Net EU contribution € 877 350,00 Address ATLAS WAY 22 S4 7QQ Sheffield See on map SME The organization defined itself as SME (small and medium-sized enterprise) at the time the Grant Agreement was signed.
