Stroke is a condition that afflicts millions of people and families in the world. The projections suggest that within the next twenty years there will be a total increase of 34% of the total number of cases of stroke in the European Union. Despite stroke is a chronic condition where home visits play an integrated role for effective results, stroke services in developed countries mainly consist in a period of care in hospital. In this context, although wearable medical devices market is dramatically growing, and is expected to reach a value of about 7.9B€ by 2021, the rehabilitation field has not benefited from this growth. Indeed, a preliminary market research revealed a demand of devices supporting both the prognosis definition and the rehabilitation process with evidence-based approaches, in particular for homecare.
The feasibility study has deepen the value creation processes of the Morecognition rehabilitation program. The team started an in-depth customer discovery and has interacted with the end-users in order to evaluate the matching between the product/service offer and the customer actual needs. This has led to a better understanding of the product value, and to an updated version of the business model.
The feasibility study also incorporated the following objective:
preliminary freedom to operate analysis;
brand identity and product naming;
wearability optimization of the medical device.
Morecognition is reinventing the rehabilitation process, starting from upper motor neuron lesion as the result of pathologies such as stroke, multiple sclerosis, traumatic brain injury and cerebral palsy. Rehabilitation actually starts in the hospital and should be continued as necessary after release from the hospital; up to now services are costly and highly dependent on human resources. Mo.Re. SME 1 Project stemmed in this context, matching demand and supply to find new technological solutions for the most important problem in healthcare systems: the necessity of a continuous, personalized and effective home rehabilitation program. Thanks to an innovative motor-cognitive rehabilitation program (clinical trial in progress), the Morecognition system enables patients to improve their recovery, both by accelerating the recovery time span and by achieving higher functional outcomes. The technological framework, based on a wearable device and a cloud service, allows to evaluate the effectiveness of the patient’s home therapy, thus reducing the home-based interventions.
