Objective

The EU maritime transport constitutes a crucial link in the global logistic chains and plays a leading role in international freight transport. Serving 40% of the EU’s internal trade and 75% of its external trade, maritime transport is an essential element in supporting Europe in maintaining its Number 1 position in global trade. Therefore, as a key node of the EU’s TEN-T ports have the ultimate objective to fully integrate maritime transport into the global logistics chain.
Within this framework, DocksTheFuture aims at defining the vision for the ports of the future in 2030, covering all specific issues that could define this concept including among others, dredging, emission reduction, energy transition, electrification, smart grids, port-city interface and the use of renewable energy management.
The proposal already addressed a preliminary research on the Port of Future concept, the definition of several Port of the Future topics to be addressed and their related targets in 2030 and a preliminary list of projects that could be potentially clustered together with the RIA retained proposals.
Moving from this point, DockTheFuture will:
- refine and tune the Port of Future concepts, the Port of the Future topics and their related targets in 2030 and the list of projects to be clustered together with the RIA retained proposals,
- identify appropriate KPIs and relevant monitoring and evaluation of results of actions
- leading to the a Port of the Future Road Map for 2030 that will include a number of exploitation elements such as tools for evaluation and transferability of Port of the Future solutions, R&D and policy recommendations, training packages and the creation of a Port of the Future Network of Excellence
All of these elements will be supported by a comprehensive Dissemination and Communication plan targeting all ports in Europe and other relevant stakeholders, including Mediterranean and other Neighbouring Partner Countries.

Summary of the context and overall objectives of the project

According to the European Commission (2019), Europe's ports are vital gateways, linking its transport corridors to the rest of the world. 74% of goods entering or leaving Europe go by sea, and Europe boasts some of the finest port facilities in the world. Ports play an equally important role to support the exchange of goods within the internal market and in linking peripheral and island areas with the mainland of Europe. Ports are not only great for moving goods around, they also constitute energy hubs for conventional and renewable energies. 400 million passengers embark and disembark in European ports every year. Ports generate employment; 1.5 million workers are employed in European ports, with the same amount again employed indirectly across the 22 EU maritime Member States.

However, European port cities are also places of conflict between economy and ecology. Ports city relationships have weakened recently as the port and city disintegrated with less direct economic benefits for cities while lots of environmental impacts due to air, water and land pollution still remain for local communities. So, the common challenge of many port cities is labelled the local-global mismatch. As an example, more than 90% of the indirect economic impacts of the ports of Le Havre are taking place in other regions than the port region itself (Karimpour et al., 2019).

The DocksTheFuture (DTF) Project aims at defining the vision for the ports of the future in 2030, covering all specific issues that could define this concept including among others, dredging, emission reduction, energy transition, electrification, smart grids, port-city interface and the use of renewable energy management.

The project is a Horizon 2020 Coordination and Support Action, and consist by definition of actions consisting primarily of accompanying measures such as standardization, dissemination, awareness-raising and communication, networking, coordination or support services, policy dialogues and mutual learning exercises and studies, including design studies for new infrastructure and may also include complementary activities of strategic planning, networking and coordination between programs in different countries.

Plan for the Dissemination and Communication of the action Results (PDCR) - update

The Deliverable is an update of the Plan released on M3. Related task: 4.1 - Plan for the Dissemination and Communication of the action Results (PDCR).

Clustered Projects guidance document

The document will contain all the relevant information for Projects to be clustered including key information (impacts, foreseen, expected results, etc). The document will also select the different project clouds. Related task: 2.2 - Selection for clustering of related Projects and Activities.

Stakeholders consultation proceedings

The deliverable is the sum up of “Consultation” related to all activities where the DocksTheFuture will have formal contacts with individuals and organisations in order to collect their opinions and find out their views about the “Port of the Future” concepts, topics and projects. Related task: 1.2 - Stakeholders consultation.

Desktop analysis of the concept including EU Policies - key results

The Deliverable, based on the literature review of existing studies, researches, analysis dealing with the Port of the Future concept/idea will gather and analyze information, already available in print or published on the internet. Related task: 1.1 - Desktop analysis review for the concept including EU Policies.

Analysis of macro trends and perspectives - key results

The Deliverable will the result of a macroeconomic analysis on trends and perspectives in ports and maritime domains, with a specific focus on port-city relations and international cooperation. Related task: 1.4 - Analysis of macrotrends and perspectives.

Maritime traffic analysis and forecast review - key results

The Deliverable will make available a detailed analysis of maritime traffic of EU seaports. Related task: 1.3 - Maritime traffic analysis and forecast review.

Clustering Methodology

The Deliverable will focus on the Clustering Methodology including additional criteria that will have to be defined and taken into account for the consolidated, final selection of actions stemming from the call, from other calls of Horizon 2020 programme and other ongoing activities in the sector at both strategic and pragmatic level. Related task: 2.1 - Clustering Methodology.

Plan for the Dissemination and Communication of the action Results (PDCR)

The Deliverable moves from the preliminary draft plan presented in the proposal that be updated at the beginning of the project and regularly during the project timeframe, including a record of activities related to Dissemination and Communication (D&C). Related task: 4.1 - Plan for the Dissemination and Communication of the action Results (PDCR).

Intermediate Report on Dissemination and Communication activities (I)

The Deliverable is intended to be a summary of the main activities and results of WP4 with analysis of contacts and indications for further improvements or corrective actions (if needed). Related task: 4.1 - Plan for the Dissemination and Communication of the action Results (PDCR).

Port of the Future concepts, topics and projects - draft for experts validation

The Deliverable will deploy the draft version of “Port of the Future” concepts, Port of the Future Topics and Projects and Initiatives of Interest for clusterisation to be used in the following WPs, in order to be validated by experts. Related task: 1.5 - Specific Workshop with experts.

Port of the Future concepts, topics and projects - consolidated versions

The Deliverable will deploy the consolidated version of “Port of the Future” concepts, Port of the Future Topics and Projects and Initiatives of Interest for clusterisation to be used in the following WPs. Related task: 1.5 - Specific Workshop with experts.

Plan for the Exploitation of the action Results (PER) - updated version

The Deliverable is a detailed exploitation plan update produced in order to ensure the transfer of project results beyond its life. Related task: 5.1 - Plan for the Exploitation of the action Results (PER): updates.
