Objective THE PROPOSED RESEARCH ACTIVITY AIMS TO PERFORM A CRITICAL ASSESSMENT OF EXISTING DATA AND MODELS THAT DESCRIBE THE HYDRAULIC BEHAVIOUR OF A PARTIALLY UNCOVERED CORE, IN PARTICULAR UNDER SMALL BREAK LOCA CONDITIONS. EXISTING DEFICIENCIES AND GAPS IN KNOWLEDGE WILL BE CLARIFIED AND CORRESPONDING EXPERIMENTS TO COMPLETE THE UNDERSTANDING WILL BE SPECIFIED. IN DETAIL THE FOLLOWING GOALS WILL BE ACHIEVED: A) CRITICAL REVIEW OF EXPERIMENTAL DATA ON PARTIALLY UNCOVERED CORE THERMOHYDRAULICS; B) CRITICAL REVIEW OF MODEL APPROACHES AND MODELLING ASSUMPTIONS TO SIMULATE THE THERMOHYDRAULICS OF A PARTIALLY UNCOVERED CORE; C) SENSITIVITY STUDY WITH A SYSTEM CODE TO INVESTIGATE PARAMETER DEPENDENCIES AND MODELLING SHORTCOMINGS; D) SPECIFICATION OF REQUIREMENTS FOR FUTURE EXPERIMENTS TO RESOLVE MODELLING SHORTCOMINGS AS STATED UNDER (C). THE STUDY IS AIMED TO PRESENT AND-OR DEVELOP A COHERENT SET OF MODELS FOR THE CONSTITUTIVE EQUATIONS NECESSARY IN COMPUTER CODES SUCH AS FLUT AND CATHARE TO SIMULATE THE HYDRODYNAMIC AND HEAT TRANSFER OF A PARTIALLY UNCOVERED CORE. SPECIAL EMPHASIS WILL BE DEVOTED TOWARDS THE ASSESSMENTS OF PHASE SEPARATION PHENOMENA IN THE LIQUID PART AND ENTRAINMENT- DE-ENTRAINMENT EFFECTS IN THE VAPOUR PART. THE COMPUTER CODE COBRA-TRAC WILL BE APPLIED TO SIMULATE A SELECTED SEPARATE EFFECT EXPERIMENT AND PERFORM SENSITIVITY ANALYSIS WITH A RANGE PF PARAMETERS-MODELS. FOR CONDITIONS WHERE NO DATA ARE AVAILABLE AND-OR ADDITIONAL DATA TEST SEEM APPROPRIATE, EXPERIMENTS WILL BE PROPOSED. LOCAL CONDENSATION EFFECTS FOR COLD LEG, HOT LEG AND COMBINED INJECTIONS WILL BE EXAMINED TOGETHER WITH OSCILLATORY DOWNCOMER BEHAVIOUR WHERE APPLICABLE. FOR CONDITIONS WHERE NO DATA ARE AVAILABLE AND-OR ADDITIONAL DATA SEEMS APPROPRIATE, EXPERIMENTS WILL BE PROPOSED AND RANKED ACCORDING TO THEIR PRIORITIES.
