Objective The first exascale supercomputer is likely to be on-line in the 2020-2021 time period and to employ highly heterogeneous compute and memory subsystems. Only the presence of mature programming environments can guarantee its efficient usage since day one of its delivery. EPiGRAM-HS, leveraging the results of the EPiGRAM project, will provide such a programming environment. The overall objective of EPiGRAM-HS is the development of a new validated programming environment for large-scale heterogeneous computing systems, including accelerators, reconfigurable hardware and low-power microprocessor together with non-volatile and high-bandwidth memories, for enabling applications to run on large-scale heterogeneous systems at maximum performance.EPiGRAM-HS will first extend the programmability of large-scale heterogeneous systems, by introducing new concepts, adding functionalities and carrying out implementations in MPI and GASPI. EPiGRAM-HS will also maximize the productivity of application development by designing and implementing APIs, runtime systems, and a DSL, for auto-tuned communication, optimized data placement, automatic code generation and data migration. Finally, the EPiGRAM-HS programming environment will be integrated into and validated against large HPC scientific applications and a deep-learning framework for data analytics. Most importantly, EPiGRAM-HS will provide a migration path for applications to use large-scale heterogeneous systems. By contributing to the standardization of MPI and GASPI, we will ensure that new proposed features are standardized for a large and broad adoption. EPiGRAM-HS consortium has been designed to create a balanced team from academia, high-performance computing centers, intergovernmental organizations and industry. The EPiGRAM-HS has the ambition of providing the future programming environment for the European exascale Demonstrator and will have a major impact on programming exascale supercomputers.
