Project description DEENESFRITPL Hybrid device dramatically extends smartphone battery life Depending on use, smartphone batteries barely last a day on one charge, and regular charging causes their performance to degrade over time. The battery lifespan of a modern smartphone is 1–3 years, which is typically just above 1 000 charge cycles as rated by the manufacturer. The EU-funded Capacitoxx project is developing a hybrid cell that integrates a small supercapacitor with a rechargeable battery that could make smartphones handle 1 million charge cycles. This combination could offer rapid charging times of less than a second and a device lifespan of more than 10 years. It could also dramatically increase energy as smart devices would be able to operate for over a week on a single charge. Show the project objective Hide the project objective Objective Many current smart devices are let down by their battery life. Smartphones, for example, can only survive on a single full charge for less than a day. This is caused by the low storage capacity currently available with this technology, which only looks to become worse as batteries can’t keep up with the power consumption of electronics from Moore’s Law (smartphones are 16 times more powerful than 9 years ago. When the device does need to be charged it can take from 1.5-2.5 hours and the battery will eventually stop functioning after only 100 charges, or 1-3 years.Pntlloxx have developed a small super-capacitor that combines with a rechargeable battery to create a hybrid-cell to be used with smart devices. The use of Capacitoxx allows for rapid charging times, giving a smart device a full charge in less than a second, and a lifespan of over 10 years (nearly 1M charges). Energy density is also significantly increased to allow users to operate smart devices for over a week on a single charge. This reduces battery wastage, pollution, and purchasing cost found with existing solutions.Following a very promising preliminary validation of our innovative technology during initial in-house tests, developments will begin to optimise and design the integrated system to be fully commercialized by reaching the market in 2021. Incorporated in the Israel in 2016 with its core business in the smart device battery market, Pntlloxx have received €500K in funding and have a staff headcount of 4 working on the solution. The proposed work in Phase 1 of the SME instrument fits into the overall Pntlloxx plan to reach market by contributing the financial resources needed to plan a fast, sound and wider deployment of the Capacitoxx solution and the market uptake. It will also allow the SME to accomplish key feasibility activities and reduce the business risks, such as business planning, customer identification and outreach, and stronger IP management strategy.
