Project description
Solutions for shrinking cities
Some cities will shrink. The shrinking city phenomenon is multidimensional, stemming from urban decline that can be caused by a number of issues – from depletion of natural resources to deindustrialisation and migration. Whatever the cause, studies show that decline is usually enduring, and the shrinkage poses a threat to European competitiveness. In this context, the EU-funded RE-CITY project will provide a perspective for the robust and sustainably sound development of shrinking cities while supporting elements of economic prosperity, liveability, social stability and innovation. Bringing together 16 academic and non-academic partners who represent expertise in spatial planning, geography, economics and social science, the project will develop solutions for shrinking cities.
