Social Networks of the Past: Mapping Hispanic and Lusophone Literary Modernity, 1898-1959

Project description

Filling the Ibero-American knowledge gap

What do we know about European and non-European social and cultural life of the 20th century? What was the impact of Hispanic and lusophone literary networks and cultural mediators on international modernity between 1898 and 1959? The EU-funded MapModern project will use cutting-edge technology to answer these questions. It will reveal the lost history of Ibero-American mediators in modernist intercultural and multilingual networks. The project’s twofold methodology includes, first, an open and collaborative research tool providing a data source for quantitative and qualitative analysis on Ibero-American mediators. The second focuses on the cultural transformation process, exploring the institutionalisation of Ibero-American cultures and the rise of translated literature in key Ibero-American modernist journals. The position of Ibero-American women in the cultural field will also be studied.
