Diabetic nephropathy modelling in hESC-derived 3D kidney organoids

Utilising kidney organoids in the search for new diabetic nephropathy therapies

Nephropathy is a major diabetes morbidity that often progresses to end-stage renal disease as there are no available treatments apart from glycaemic and blood pressure control strategies. To address this limitation, the EU-funded EPIORGABOLISM project is working on a novel diabetic nephropathy model that has the potential to assist future drug discovery efforts. Researchers will use human embryonic stem cells to derive kidney organoids and study how the metabolic alterations in diabetes can epigenetically reprogramme kidney cells and cause fibrosis. Results will provide important insight into disease pathology and progression and help identify novel therapeutic targets.
