Tailoring carbon fibres to the perfect sizing
Carbon fibre-reinforced polymers are used in various industries requiring strong but lightweight products. Sizing – a process of drawing out individual carbon fibres, coating them and combining them into a single fibre – protects against damage during handling, weaving and processing. This strengthened bonding between the fibre and the resin improves its mechanical properties in terms of compressive strength and shear strength. The aim of the EU-funded project CUSTOMISIZE is to develop improved carbon fibre-sizing methods that can increase interfacial shear strength by 90 %. Increasing the interface strength between the carbon and the resin will lead to the production of higher-performance composites.
