Cold spray technology for durable aircraft parts
Aerospace coatings make aircraft parts capable of withstanding incredibly harsh conditions. Cold spray technology, a groundbreaking repair method, accelerates metal particles to high velocities to treat the surfaces of corroded and worn parts. Unlike conventional thermal spray methods, there is no melting of powder materials with material deposition possible on both metallic and non-metallic surfaces. The challenge is optimising and adapting this sophisticated deposition method for aircraft applications. The EU-funded project CO3 will demonstrate cold spray deposition on an aircraft’s front landing gear fairing. The focus will be on improving deposition efficiency and the structural characteristics of non-metallic substrates, expanding production capacity via robots. Project results will serve to qualify this technology for aircraft applications.
