Policy-making of early nature conservation. The Netherlands and the United Kingdom compared, 1930-1960

Project description

The birth of nature conservation policymaking

The period between 1930 and 1960 is important in terms of the development of ecological ideas, as well as the establishment of nature conservation arrangements between politics, science and civil society. Another aspect is the influence of extreme right-wing political positions. In this context, the EU-funded PmNC project will investigate the conservationist policies during this period, focusing on the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. For each country, the project will research a civil society organisation, a state agency and a scientific society and their respective roles in the political agenda-setting process. The findings will shed light on the political and discursive continuities in the policymaking process of early nature conservation.
