Illuminating neural microcircuitry underlying flicker resonance in the visual cortex

A closer look at the brain’s responses to flickering light

Nineteenth-century physiologist Jan Purkinje (1787–1869) studied the visual illusions induced by flickering light. Scientists remain fascinated by the effects of flicker on brain rhythms. In this context, the EU-funded ResonanceCircuits project will use recordings that span spatial scales (from neurons and local field potentials across cortical layers to EEG) to characterise the neural mechanisms by which flicker stimuli engage resonant properties of brain rhythms. Optogenetic tools will be used to identify and manipulate genetically targeted cell types. Overall, the project’s findings will provide the means to exploit the untapped potential of flicker as a tool to study and modulate brain rhythms.
