Project description

English EN

Music education as a sociological tool

Music class can be much more than just learning notes. It can convey ideas and ideals. The EU-funded ClassRockED project will undertake an innovative interdisciplinary study on how teaching music can transmit and communicate class ideals and consciousness. The research will be carried out at a music school for middle students in the United States Midwest, a working-class bastion of America. It will involve anthropological and ethno-musicological methods as well as a theoretical basis of cultural sociology, ethnography, studies of gesture along with sociology of music and music education research. The goal is to gain an in-depth understanding of how certain social class meanings, symbols and ideals are performed when teaching music.
