Bacterial production of sustainable polymer building blocks

Plastics are ubiquitous, found in everyday objects in our homes, cars, supermarkets, and factories. The search for sustainable biopolymers is on, and that means finding natural monomers, biocatalysts, and green processing technologies. For highly specific and efficient production, the catalyst must bind the monomers in a lock-and-key fashion, requiring detailed structural and functional insight into both the catalyst and its substrate. The EU-funded Monopoly project is employing high-tech methods to tackle this important and complex problem. Once they identify the lock and key, researchers plan to engineer new strains of the bacteria Escherichia coli to synthesise the monomers in industrially relevant quantities.
