Disruptive terahertz technology for wireless signals

Wireless signals are one of life’s essentials, allowing people around the world to communicate using Wi-Fi devices and cellular phones. The EU-funded TERAWAY project is working on the generation, emission and detection of wireless signals within an ultra-wide range of carrier frequencies that will cover the W (92-114.5 GHz), D (130-174.8 GHz) and THz band (252-322 GHz). It will make it possible to organise the spectral resources of a network within these bands to form a common pool of radio resources that can be flexibly coordinated and used. Photonics will be used to develop multi-channel transceivers with wireless signal amplification into the optical domain and multi-beam optical beamforming to increase the directivity of each wireless beam.
