New app to prevent gestational diabetes
Gestational diabetes is associated with multiple adverse pregnancy outcomes. Women with gestational diabetes are at subsequent high risk of type 2 diabetes, especially three to six years after delivery. What is more, exposure to hyperglycaemia in the womb predisposes children to becoming overweight or obese, both associated with the development of type 2 diabetes. The EU-funded IMPACT DIABETES B2B project will develop and demonstrate an evidence-based, low-resource system-level intervention. It will identify those most at risk of developing gestational diabetes and provide them with personalised coaching delivered via a smartphone application. The main aim will be to empower the target group to make healthy decisions that will improve pregnancy and postpartum outcomes.
