Holistic photonic ML paradigms for most challenging imaging applications
Neuromorphic photonics enjoys much attention today as it offers speed and energy efficiency over digital electronics, especially for demanding applications. But electronic-photonic systems on a chip, driven by recently emerging applications (such as neuromorphic computing), demand the reconfigurability of photonic integrated circuits with highly scalable photonic switching units. The EU-funded NEoteRIC project aims to create holistic photonic machine learning paradigms for most advanced, challenging imaging applications. The new paradigms will provide paramount frame rate increase and higher performance classification, in addition to dramatically lowering power consumption. The key solution is multiple innovations such as the photonic 'transistor' level, the development and upscaling of a reconfigurable photonic FPGA-like circuit and fully reconfigurable key silicon photonic components.
