Project description
Optical interconnects to boost Datacenter and 5G Network potential
Future Datacenter networks and 5G networks with increased communication bandwidth requirements will rely heavily on the use of optical interconnects that provide Terabit capacity. The EU-funded POETICS project aims to develop high-capacity Multi-Chip Modules comprising novel Terabit optical engines and optical switches together with digital switches. These powerful photonic modules will rely on a photonic integration technology based on a silicon nitride platform, optical polymers, InP electro-absorption modulated lasers (EMLs) and external cavity lasers, and on high-speed electronics based on BiCMOS technology. POETICS will focus principally on minimising the electrical interconnect distance between the optical engine and the digital switching chip, and on removing signal conditioning chips and unwanted components (such as sockets) that inevitably lead to increased power consumption and lower signal integrity.
