Future propulsion and integration: towards a hybrid-electric 50-seat regional aircraft

New hybrid-electric technologies in aviation

FlightPath2050 envisages a fully interconnected European aviation system by 2050, which will be based on an integrated logistical transport chain to meet carbon neutral growth goals. For that purpose, research on hybrid-electric technologies is supported and encouraged. The EU-funded FUTPRINT50 project will accelerate electrification technologies for aviation focussing on energy storage and harvesting and thermal management. The new technologies will be applied to an up to 50-seat class hybrid-electric aircraft that will enter into service by 2035/40. The project is strongly anchored in open international collaboration, uniting the EU, Russia, Brazil and the US, creating open tools and preparing future engineers through an accompanying FUTPRINT50 Academy. It will investigate and improve multidisciplinary design optimisation (MDO) methods to generate sophisticated design decisions fast. Moreover, an overall roadmap considering technologies, regulations, experimental facilities and demonstrators, and feasibility will be published to serve as beacon towards a clean future.
