Funding research at the crossroad of biodiversity and climate change to halt loss of biodiversity
Biodiversity, the unique variety of life on our planet, underpins our economy and well-being. However, human-induced changes to ecosystems and the extinction of species have been more rapid in the past 50 years than at any time in human history. The IPBES Global assessment identified climate change as one of the top five direct drivers of biodiversity loss. Stopping the loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services is a top priority in the EU, which supports the BiodivClim initiative to gain a better understanding of the interactions between biodiversity and climate change so they can be incorporated into decision-support models and tools. Co-funded by the European Commission to fund transnational research proposals on biodiversity and climate change, BiodivClim is networking more than 33 funding agencies from 22 countries from Europe and other continents. Its aim is to promote coordinated international research and research programmes coordination to provide policymakers and other stakeholders with the tools and solutions to improve the conservation & sustainable use of biodiversity & ecosystems under a changing climate. The BiodivClim cofund action fits the context of the BiodivERsA Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda 2017-2020.
