Assessing noise generation in aircraft with distributed electric propulsion

Distributed electric propulsion (DEP) is a disruptive aircraft technology that can lead to significant fuel savings and emissions reduction. The goal of the EU-funded SilentProp project is to improve understanding of key noise aspects involved in such configurations at experimental and numerical levels. The project will conduct extensive testing in a modern and large anechoic wind tunnel to determine the noise generated by adjacent propellers in a DEP system. Efficient numerical methodologies for calculating near- and far field noise for a wide range of DEP designs will complement experimental tests. Another focus will be on assessing the effectiveness of various suppression technologies. The project's results will provide a valuable foundation for optimal DEP design and could help increase social acceptance of such aircraft.
