Pushing the frontiers of fibre laser technology in the molecular fingerprint region

Over the last two decades, fibre lasers have revolutionised laser technology and found application in diverse fields from telecommunications and printing to materials processing and biomedicine. Chirped pulse amplification (CPA), winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2018, has made the best even better. It enables more compact and precise high-intensity lasers by creating ultrashort, extremely high-intensity pulses. The EU-funded FLORIDA project is developing an all-fibre laser utilising CPA for application to the mid-infrared region so critical to molecular identity. A wide variety of non-linear phenomena occur when very intense light such as that from pulsed lasers interacts with matter. The cutting-edge technology will open the door to novel applications in numerous fields of research and development.
