ScraPping cArbon Reinforced ThermoplAstic.

Project description

Improved methods of recycling thermoplastic composites

Recyclability has been a long-promised benefit of using thermoplastic composites in the aerospace industry. However, grinding and re-moulding are often economically unviable and are a form of downgrading: the processes can dramatically shorten the fibre length and degrade the polymer's mechanical properties. The EU-funded SPARTA project aims to develop improved methods of scrapping thermoplastic composites that minimise labour cost and manual defects. The selection of the most suitable recycling process will be based on previous studies performed by project partners and a comparison with state-of-the-art techniques. The project estimates that the cost per kilogramme of the scrapped material will be EUR 0.37/kg which is significantly low.
