Freedom From Caste: The Political Thought of Periyar E.V. Ramasamy in a Global Context

Project description

An Indian political thinker’s challenge to global caste-related injustices

Periyar E.V. Ramasamy (1879-1973) is a key anti-caste thinker from India. He was known for his firm opposition to the hierarchical caste order based on Indic practices and traditions. He is celebrated for promoting rationalism. Periyar was also a radical feminist who fought for gender equality. The EU-funded CasteFree project will provide a comprehensive and critical account of Periyar’s political thought to inform research conducted at the University of Wolverhampton on decolonised philosophy and on casteism in the South Asian diaspora. The project aims to advance Periyar’s thought within global intellectual conversations on identity, feminism and social justice and to strengthen efforts to tackle caste-related injustices among South Asian communities in Europe.
