Project description
A natural way to keep vineyards healthy
Grapevine trunk diseases can be destructive, reducing the lifespan of vineyards. Unfortunately, it’s an ever-worsening problem that is increasing in incidence around the world. The EU-funded BIOBESTicide project is developing an effective and cost-efficient biopesticide to fight this disease. The protection system is based on the oomycete Pythium oligandrum strain I-5180 that, applied at optimal time and concentration, colonises the roots of vines and stimulates natural plant defences against grapevine trunk diseases, providing a protection that ranges between 40 % and 60 %. The BIOBESTicide project will validate the efficiency of the formulated product on vineyards of different geographical areas. A demonstration will be based on an innovative bio-based value chain starting from the valorisation of sustainable biomasses.
