Biodegradation for end-of-life thermoset composites
Thermoset composites are widely used by high-technological industrial sectors - such as aeronautics, automotive, construction, energy, sports, electronics - due to their unique properties: mechanical strength, chemical resistance, durability, lightness, corrosion resistance, and more. However, they are becoming a challenge for industry waste managers. The EU-funded BIZENTE project presents an innovative solution to resolve the end-of-life issues of thermoset composites based on the development of a new technology focused on controlled biodegradation using enzymes. BIZENTE will determine directed enzyme evolution strategies to improve ligninolytic oxidoreductases, which have been selected as the most suited biocatalysts to degrade the three types of thermoset composites based on epoxy, polyester and vinylester resins and reinforced with glass fibre or carbon fibre.
