Project description
How we make sense of facts to suit our needs
Facts can be distorted or oversimplified. Facts can also be interpreted in order for them to serve a specific purpose. The EU-funded MOREV project will study motivated reading of evidence in order to identify the goals that push the reading of evidence. It will also study how agents distort readings. They may not interpret vague information sceptically. They may decide not to read or reason about available evidence. For instance, consumers may intentionally distort their beliefs about some attributes to make their purchasing plans easier. On an individual level, the project will study agents’ motivated reading about others’ abilities or their socioeconomic status and other characteristics. The question to be answered is whether agents who are close (as network members and in social identity) treat others differently.
