Ultrafast and low-energy signal processing with innovative coupling of light and matter

Integrated photonics has tremendous potential to overcome many of the limitations of electronic circuitry, including the high power consumption required to process and store a (relatively) limited amount of data. However, barring all-optical circuitry, such devices require repeated conversion between electrical and optical signals. Phase-change materials (PCMs) are excellent candidates for dual optoelectrical modulation. Furthermore, plasmonic PCMs could lead to significant reductions in size and power consumption. The EU-funded PHEMTRONICS project is exploiting plasmonic PCMs in novel reconfigurable and tuneable adaptive devices for applications in all sorts of optoelectronics from smart phones and displays to optical computing.
