Women, Disability, and Inclusion – Scientific Excellence in Bulgaria

Project description

Strengthening the inclusion of women with disabilities in Bulgaria

The gender perspective on disability demands attention. According to the UN, women and girls with disabilities face systemic marginalisation; attitudinal and environmental barriers that lead to lower economic and social status; barriers to the access of education, healthcare (including sexual and reproductive health), information, services and justice; and social and political exclusion. This significantly impacts their quality of life. The EU-funded MILIEU project aims to promote feminist disability studies in Bulgaria. Specifically, it will bring together the Institute for the Study of Societies and Knowledge of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (ISSK-BAS), Spain’s Universidad Complutense de Madrid and Italy’s Università degli Studi di Genova. The goal of this twinning initiative is to enhance studies on women, disability and inclusion, and provide recommendations and guidelines to policymakers and other institutions to raise further awareness of these issues.
