Project description
Deeper understanding atmospheric chemistry calls for a radical approach
Earth’s lower atmosphere contains organic radicals that control the concentration and distribution of compounds, including some greenhouse gases and pollutants. In addition to undergoing chemical reactions that make them short-lived, these radicals also include several chemical structures with very different reactivities. Consequently, the identity and chemical reactions of the organic radicals present in the Earth atmosphere remain ill-understood. The EU-funded EPHEMERAL project will shed further light on the identification of these radicals, in particular peroxy radicals and Criegee intermediates. Based on previous work, the project will build a chemical ionisation mass spectrometer to speciate these radicals in the atmosphere and study fundamental aspects of their reactivity in the laboratory. The project will improve the understanding of oxidation cycles in the atmosphere and improve predictions of atmospheric chemical composition.
