Objective The original aims of the Ecotex Project were directed towards developing a mobile system for the environmental control of the textile industry. This would involve monitoring of production data, temperature, humidity, vibration, noise, atmospheric emissions and aqueous discharges that influence production quality, environmental energy and maintenance conditions within a factory. Enabling control decisions to be made on the basis of data from well proven acquisition systems and sensors. As a result of two years research and development work the basic concept has not altered, however the system is now seen as a modular design, even though each element can stand alone as a monitoring and control system, which can include all other needed packages to build up a complete process monitoring and control architecture. Even more important, since the information is acquired and stored in a universal format, namely ASCII, it can also be seen as able to consolidate the patchwork of incompatible computer systems which represent the reality most companies have to live with. Therefore every user of the system, for engineers to administration people can create his own Web home pages and share details of their projects, projections and even their notes with the rest of the company fellows. Finally, although the Project was conceived more than three years ago, the new tool developed within Ecotex can be seen as a perfect Intranet, adapted to the needs of the textile industry; the most important new computing platform since business computers were introduced into the business environment. The proposed research is directed at developing a mobile system of the industrial textile processing which will monitor a series of parameters influencing and determining the level of production, quality, environmental and maintenance conditions. The major research task are :i) Development of low cost sensoring system able to acquire working parameters of machinery, air-conditioning plants and environmental room conditions; ii) development of a common data bank of reference for different textile processing phases, with reference to local and E.C.C. requirements; iii) development of data acquisition and direct monitoring system on two levels, one fixed system and one mobile; iv) investigation of textile processing variability in dependence of different environmental conditions; v) development of customised controls, and characterisation of polluant conditions; vi) quality control in dependence of different environmental conditions and maintenance status.
