Knowing with certainty what goes in enhances accuracy regarding what comes out

Serial crystallography is a powerful emerging method for studying the structure of macromolecules using X-ray free-electron lasers and synchrotron radiation facilities. It has recently enabled the structural description of challenging targets, such as membrane proteins, and supports the study of molecular machines 'working' at room temperature in natural conditions. As with any emerging method, standardisation is now required. The EU-funded Serial-X project is planning to deliver simple and inexpensive devices for standardised sample delivery in serial crystallography studies. Being certain of what goes in will make us more certain that our interpretation of what comes out is correct, spurring innovation in basic research, pharmaceutical development and more.
