Who is In, and Who is Not? Determining the Gaia Survey Selection Function

Project description

Making the most of a flagship European space mission

The European Space Agency’s Gaia mission has so far provided fundamental astronomical data. However, its full potential remains unexploited due to the lack of a well-characterised survey selection function. A detailed description of the probability that an astronomical object of certain properties will enter the Gaia catalogue (or not) will enable us to obtain insights into fundamental physics and astrophysics based on a set of catalogue entries. The EU-funded GaiaUnlimited project aims at researching, developing and implementing the Gaia survey selection function. The project will make publicly available the data products and open-source computer applications needed by scientists to apply the selection functions to their analyses of the Gaia data.
