Embedded monitoring systems pave the way to safe, high-voltage aircraft systems

Replacing many of an aircraft's hydraulic (liquid) and pneumatic (air or gas) systems with electrical ones promises significant benefits, including reduced weight, fuel consumption, complexity, operating costs and emissions. The significantly enhanced power demand poses challenges for the safe distribution of all that electricity. The EU-funded SEWIS project has a solution. Its new high-voltage electrical wiring and interconnection system components with built-in fibre optic and electrical sensors will detect faults and aged components, ensuring safety and reliability while paving the way to more sustainable flight.
