Project description
Bringing to light the medieval construction of Conques
A UNESCO world heritage site and known as one of the most beautiful places in France, Conques is an important tourist, historical and political area, bringing together architecture, archaeology and monuments from the 9th to the 21st century. While its cultural significance is widely recognised, Conques has not received sufficient scholarly attention. The EU-funded CONQUES project aims to reconstruct important elements of European culture by investigating the major stages in the medieval construction of Conques. This will help shed light on how Conques’ identity was built in the Middle Ages and how its history was reinvented in the 19th and 20th centuries.
