Optimising the design of oxide dispersion-strengthened alloys for additive manufacturing
The goal of the EU-funded topAM project is to develop new processing routes for creating oxide dispersion-strengthened alloys that consist of a metal matrix (FeCrAl, Ni and NiCu) with small oxide particles dispersed within it. The alloys will be produced as powders for additive manufacturing and offer a competitive advantage for the process industry, for example, in the manufacture of gas burner heads and heat exchangers, as they show good corrosion resistance and mechanical properties at elevated temperatures. Alloy and process development will be aided by advanced integrated computational materials engineering approaches that will combine thermodynamics, and microstructure and process simulations. The computational approach should help minimise development time, save raw material use and increase component lifetime.
