Project description
Nickel-based alloys in aircraft components
The EU-funded NEMARCO project targets the development of nickel-based aircraft components that will be more resistant to wear and high temperatures and less harmful to human health. Specifically, the project will work on a new generation of sealing rings for butterfly valves that belong to the cabin pressurisation air purging system. These rings are currently manufactured using cobalt-based alloys. New NiCrSiFeB alloy compositions will be explored by adapting centrifugal casting manufacturing parameters or using additive production processes (laser metal deposition). A rigorous lifecycle assessment and a preliminary toxicity study will be carried out to evaluate the environmental and economic impact of the new developments.
