Development of three dimensional coronary blood perfusion model in beating heart using advanced computational and experimental techniques.

Project description

A 3D model of coronary blood perfusion

Coronary vascular disease (CVD) poses a significant health threat associated with high mortality. The EU-funded PERFHeart project aims to shed light on the underlying causes by building a model of CVD. Since the basic trigger is the imbalance between the demand in oxygen and the supply provided by the red blood cells, scientists will start by studying microvascular geometry and coronary circulation. The information will be incorporated into a beating heart model taking into account parameters such as muscle fibre contraction, architecture, valves and arteries. The generated model can be used to investigate common pathologies such as ischaemic heart disease and infarction and test devices such as stents.
