Project description
Railway alternative communication bearers
The Shift2Rail initiative has developed a new Adaptable Communication System (ACS) to overcome shortcomings in current European rail control applications. Several potential technologies such as existing optical technologies for visible light communications, powerline communications, and short/long-range technologies for the Internet of things have been identified. Also, pioneering technologies such as high-altitude platforms and high-throughput low Earth orbit satellites will be evaluated shortly. The EU-funded AB4Rail project will identify and select alternative communication bearers for rail and appropriate communication protocols for the ACS. The project will reconsider the suitability of the advanced technologies for the ACS, assessing its expected performance, economic sustainability and status of maturity.
