Sailing to a better ship security alert system
The vast majority (80 %) of global trade relies on maritime transportation. The sector faces several challenges in safety, security and environmental protection. Major concerns represent piracy and rescue operations. GNSS technology offers a wide range of applications addressing the needs of the maritime transport industry. Galileo’s system delivers new assets and functionalities in comparison to other GNSS systems. The EU-funded GAMBAS project will focus on the modernisation of the Ship Security Alert System Cospas-Sarsat anti-piracy beacon and development of solutions for rescue operators and vessels. The project will explain how Galileo’s specific characteristics are essential for the maritime sector, propose applications, and support demonstrations at sea in Europe and beyond.
