Biocatalytic upgrading of natural biopolymers for reassembly as multipurpose materials

Project description

Refining biomass for sustainable bioproducts

Tackling climate change is a top priority of EU policy to achieve the goals of the European Green Deal. Radical changes are needed to guide the transition from a linear and carbon-based economy into a circular bio-based one, where multiple end products are derived from renewable biomass resources. The EU-funded BioUPGRADE project aims to integrate functional genomics and material science advances to transform nature's major structural polymers into a cascade of high-volume and specialised bioproducts. The project will leverage computational biology approaches to mine untapped information from genomic and proteomic datasets and will introduce a bio-customised framework that extends well beyond current synthetic biology concepts. Ultimately, it plans to establish a structure-function matrix for synthesising tailored biopolymers and new assemblies.
