Miniature electrospinning system for in-situ coating application by drone

Project description

Tiny electrospinning system could spur development of protective nanocoatings

Electrospinning is a fibre production method that uses an electric field to stretch a polymeric solution to fibre diameters in the order of micrometres to nanometres. The EU-funded Nanofix project aims to manufacture and demonstrate a protective nanocoating using an innovative compact electrospinning system moved by a drone. Taking advantage of the miniature, portable electrospinning system, researchers plan to use this technology to steer the industry towards producing and commercialising high-performance nanocoatings that protect materials from corrosion and weather damage. These coatings could also be applied to materials used in the metallic structures of buildings, bridges and in high-voltage cables in transmission lines.
