Engineering carbon nanostructures at the atomic level

Functional materials are synthetic materials with certain properties that can be significantly changed in a controlled fashion by external stimuli. Funded by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions programme, the CFMOS project plans to synthesise functional carbon-based materials that cannot be produced by traditional wet chemistry. The project will focus on open-shell carbon nanostructures that demonstrate antiferromagnetism, frustrated magnetism and high electron transport. The challenge lies in controlling the complex on-surface synthesis, a highly promising method that allows the creation of organic nanostructures with atomic precision. The newly developed materials could prove suitable for use in electronic and spintronic devices.
